Project Accountant
Do you have a passion for numbers and want to contribute to global LGBTQI rights? RFSL is looking for a project accountant to support the financial management of our international projects.
Do you have experience in financial administration, accounting, and reporting? Are you motivated by ensuring that funds are managed efficiently, transparently, and responsibly to achieve meaningful results? Then you may be the colleague we are looking for.
RFSL is seeking a Project Accountant to manage the financial administration of international projects, provide guidance and oversight to partners, and ensure compliance with financial policies and agreements. You will play a key role in strengthening financial management, internal controls, and accountability, supporting audits and reviews, and contributing to the responsible use of resources in support of human rights and social impact.
About RFSL and the finance unit
RFSL (the Swedish Federation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Intersex Rights), founded in 1950, is one of the world's oldest non-profit organizations working to advance LGBTQI rights. Our mission is to ensure that LGBTQI individuals’ human rights are respected both in Sweden and globally.
The finance unit provides essential support to all parts of the organization. As Project Accountant, you will be part of this unit and primarily support the financial follow-up and reporting for international projects in Eastern Europe, Asia, and Africa, in collaboration with RFSL’s International Unit and partner organizations.
Your role with us
As Project Accountant, you will play a key role in the financial administration of RFSL’s international development cooperation. You will be responsible for financial management and accounting of international donor-funded programmes and projects, ensuring accurate and timely project accounting, budget monitoring, and reporting to back donors such as Sida. You will ensure that finances are recorded accurately, managed transparently, and fully compliant with donor requirements, grant agreements, and internal policies.
A key part of the role is providing financial oversight and guidance to partner organisations, including reviewing their financial reports and supporting sound accounting and financial management practices. You will play an important role in strengthening internal controls, supporting audits and financial reviews, and contributing to the continuous improvement of grant finance and accounting procedures.
Through your work, you will help ensure that funds are used efficiently and responsibly to achieve project objectives and deliver impact across international programmes.
This position is based in the finance unit and works closely with both financial colleagues and international program teams. It is a permanent position with a six-month probation period.
Key responsibilities
Manage financial and accounting aspects of donor-funded programmes and projects through the full project cycle and in accordance with internal and donor-specific requirements
Monitor project and programme budgets, expenditure, and forecast, ensuring accurate cost allocation and financial control
Review and follow-up on financial reports from partner organisations internationally to ensure compliance with donor requirements, internal regulations and grant agreements
Maintain accurate project and programme accounting records, supporting documentation and audit-ready files
Support audits, financial reviews and internal control processes
Assist with the preparation of high-quality financial reports to donors (e.g., Sida), including consolidation of reports from partner organizations
Collaborate with programme teams on budgeting, financial planning and proposal development
Support budget follow-up and financial analysis, including liquidity analysis
Contribute to the year-end financial statements for RFSL
Support other financial tasks and assist colleagues within the finance unit as needed
Participate in and contribute to RFSL’s federation-wide activities and events.
Who are you?
We are looking for a structured, solution-oriented, and collaborative finance professional with strong skills in accounting, financial administration, and reporting, and a clear commitment to working in a value-driven, non-profit context. You take responsibility for your work, work independently with confidence, and ensure that financial resources are managed in ways that are transparent, compliant, and responsible, enabling meaningful impact in international development and human rights work.
You understand that strong financial management is a cornerstone of sustainable programmes and partnerships. With a systematic and thorough approach, you are comfortable working with donor-funded projects and navigating complex financial frameworks, while maintaining accuracy, clarity, and strong attention to detail. You balance detailed financial administration with a supportive, service-oriented mindset and enjoy collaborating closely with programme colleagues and partner organisations.
You thrive in an international and multicultural working environment and value teamwork and shared responsibility. You communicate financial matters clearly and pedagogically, are attentive and open to diverse perspectives, and contribute to a constructive and positive working environment. Through professionalism, integrity, and collaboration, you help build trust and strengthen internal controls and financial routines.
You are proactive, self-driven, and motivated by purpose-driven work, and you enjoy contributing to the continuous development of financial processes and the organisation together with your colleagues.
You share RFSL’s values of anti-racism, feminism, accessibility, and intersectionality.
To succeed in this role, you need:
